3- 5  - Computer Vocabulary

  • Email - To send messages and/or files electronically over the Internet.
  • Cell - The box formed at the intersection of a row and a column.
  • Column - The vertical divisions of a spreadsheet identified by a letter at the top.
  • Value - Numbers that are used by the formulas in a spreadsheet.
  • Label - Words that explain the data in a spreadsheet.
  • Row - A horizontal series of objects placed next to each other.
  • Graph - A chart that represents spreadsheet data as bars, lines, circles, etc.
  • Chart - A graphic representation of data in a spreadsheet.
  • Web Link - A "hot spot" on a webpage that takes the user to another Internet location.
  • URL - (Universal Resource Locator) The web address of a resource on the Internet. It usually begins with http://
  • Search Engine - A program that searches websites for specific keywords and returns a list of the websites where the keywords were found.
  • Web Browser - A computer program that displays data on the Internet:  The most popular web browsers are Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator.
  • Video Conferencing - A discussion between 2 or more groups of people who are in different places but can see and hear each other as if they were in the same room. The people in the meeting see each other by using cameras and video screens and hear each other using speakers and microphones.
  • Instant Message or Messaging - A short instantly viewed note sent computer to computer.
  • Ascending - To arrange alphabetically .. A to Z (Words/Text) To arrange numerically .. smallest to largest (Numbers)
  • Desending - To arrange alphabetically .. Z to A (Words/Text) To arrange numerically .. Largest to Smallest (Numbers)
  • Database - An organized collection of information on a specific topic.
  • Field - A single category of information for which data is given in each individual record. "Last name" is an example of a field that might be located in a record about a person.
  • Form View - In a database, when you see all of the fields for one record at a time.
  • List View - The table format of database, where you can see all fields at the same time.
  • Online resource - Things that are available on the Internet, such as information, forms, etc.
  • Report - A display (on screen or paper of records or parts of records.
  • Record - All of the information for one topic (person, place or thing) in the database file. A record has many fields.
  • Search Strategies - The steps that you take to locate information. Method or plan of action to obtain a goal.
  • Search/query filter - Locate a specific record(s) that satisfies a rule. (For example: Find all of the states that begin with letter A.)
  • Sort/Arrange - Organizing records in a specific order. (For example: Alphabetical order or numberical order)
